Privacy Policy
Leafscan • Last Updated: May 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information the Leafscan mobile application handles and how. We have written it to reflect exactly how the app behaves.
In short, Leafscan runs entirely on your device. There is no account system, no analytics or tracking, and no data is sent to our servers. We do not operate any server that receives your photos, measurements, or personal information.
In this policy, "we", "us", and "our" refer to the developers of Leafscan. "You" refers to the person using the app.
Data We Collect
We, as developers, do not collect any personal data. Leafscan has no backend server, no user accounts, and no telemetry, so no information ever reaches us.
All data the app works with is created by you and stored only on your device:
Photos you scan. When you take a photo with the camera or select an image from your photo library, the image is loaded into the app to measure leaf area. The photo is held in memory while you work with it. It is saved to the app's local database only if you choose to log it to your notebook.
Measurement records ("logs"). When you save a result, the app stores the related image, an auto-generated or user-provided label/name, a timestamp, and the calculated leaf area (and, optionally, a leaf count) in a local database on your device.
App settings. Your preferences (measurement unit, reference sheet dimensions, hole subtraction, per-leaf logging, minimum area percentage, and photo size) are saved locally on your device.
We do not collect names, email addresses, account credentials, location data, contacts, advertising identifiers, or any other personal identifiers, because the app contains no functionality that gathers them.
To let you scan leaves, the app may request the following permissions. These are used only on your device for the stated purpose and are never used to transmit data to us or third parties:
Camera — to take a photo of a leaf for measurement.
Photos / Photo Library (and, on some Android versions, storage access) — to let you choose an existing image to measure.
You can decline or revoke these permissions in your device settings; the corresponding feature (camera capture or gallery selection) will simply be unavailable.
How We Use Your Data
Because all data stays on your device, it is used solely to provide the app's features:
Measuring leaf area. Photos are processed entirely on your device using on-device image processing (OpenCV) to detect a reference object, correct perspective, identify leaf surfaces, and calculate area. No image is uploaded for processing, and no machine-learning model is downloaded at runtime.
Keeping a notebook. Saved logs let you review and organize past measurements in collections.
Remembering your preferences. Settings are stored so the app behaves consistently between sessions.
We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, analytics, or any purpose beyond the app's core functionality.
Data Storage and Retention
Local storage only. Saved measurements and images are stored in a local SQLite database on your device. App settings are stored in your device's local app preferences.
No cloud storage or backup by us. We do not store, back up, or sync your data to any server. (Note: if your device's operating system or its own backup service backs up app data, that is governed by your device/OS settings and the OS provider's policies, not by us.)
Temporary files. When you export to CSV, a temporary CSV file may be created in the app's temporary directory to enable saving or sharing. These files are managed by the operating system's temporary storage.
Retention. Your data remains on your device until you delete it. You control retention entirely:
Delete individual logs or collections within the app.
Clear the app's data through your device settings.
Uninstall the app, which removes the local database and stored preferences.
We have no ability to access, retain, or delete your data remotely, because we never receive it.
Your Rights and Choices
Since your data never leaves your device and is fully under your control, you can exercise the following at any time directly within the app or your device settings:
Access and review all your saved measurements and images in the app's notebook.
Export your measurement data (collection, name, timestamp, area, and optional leaf count) to a CSV file. CSV exports contain measurement metadata only and do not include image data.
Delete any or all of your logs, collections, and settings, or remove everything by uninstalling the app.
Depending on where you live, data protection laws (such as the GDPR in the European Economic Area/UK or the CCPA/CPRA in California) may grant you rights such as access, correction, deletion, and portability. Because we do not collect or hold any of your personal data on our systems, there is nothing for us to retrieve, change, or erase on your behalf — you already have full, direct control of all data on your device.
Children's Privacy
Leafscan does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children. The app has no accounts, no online features that gather data, no advertising, and no tracking. All data stays on the device under the control of the device's user.
If you believe a child has used the app, you can review and delete any data stored on the device as described previously. If you have questions, contact us using the details in the Contact Us section.
Third-Party Services
Leafscan does not integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, crash-reporting, or cloud services, and it does not include any third-party SDK that collects your data.
There are two limited, user-initiated interactions that involve software outside the app:
Opening external links. The app provides links to our website (https://www.leafscanapp.com) and an online user guide (PDF). If you tap one of these, your device opens them in your separate browser or PDF viewer. Visiting these pages is subject to your browser's and the website host's own practices, not this app.
Sharing exports. When you export data to CSV, the app uses your device's standard "share" feature so you can choose where to send or save the file. Any app or service you select to receive the file is governed by that recipient's own privacy practices. The app does not automatically send exports anywhere.
We do not control and are not responsible for the privacy practices of external websites or any service you choose to share a file with.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example to reflect changes in the app's functionality or legal requirements. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy and make the updated version available (for example, within the app or on our website). We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the app after an update means you accept the revised policy.
